The Procedure
The no-scalpel vasectomy is performed under local anaesthesia in the clinic. After numbing the scrotum, a small puncture is made to access each vas deferens. A segment of each vas is removed, and the ends are sealed using cautery and/or titanium clips. The small puncture typically heals without stitches. The entire procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes. You will be awake throughout but should not feel pain, only mild pressure or tugging.
Who Is a Candidate?
Vasectomy is suitable for men who are certain they do not want future children. It should be considered a permanent decision. While vasectomy reversal is possible, it is not always successful and is not covered by Medicare. Men should carefully consider this decision and discuss it with their partner. There is no minimum age requirement, but most urologists recommend thorough counselling for younger men.
Recovery
Most men return to desk work within 2-3 days and physical work within a week. You should rest for 24-48 hours after the procedure, apply ice packs to reduce swelling, and wear supportive underwear for the first week. Avoid heavy lifting, exercise, and sexual activity for one week. Mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort are normal and typically resolve within 1-2 weeks.
Risks & Considerations
Vasectomy is very safe with serious complications being rare. Potential risks include temporary bruising and swelling (common), chronic scrotal pain (1-2% of cases), infection or haematoma (rare), sperm granuloma formation (small, usually painless lump), and vasectomy failure requiring repeat procedure (<0.1%). Importantly, vasectomy does not provide immediate contraception - a semen analysis at 12 weeks must confirm absence of sperm before relying on the vasectomy for contraception.
