Adult Circumcision Melbourne
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin, the retractable fold of skin covering the head (glans) of the penis. In adults, circumcision is typically performed for medical reasons such as phimosis (tight foreskin that cannot be retracted), recurrent balanitis (inflammation of the glans), paraphimosis, or other conditions. Dr Dias performs adult circumcision using precise surgical techniques to achieve optimal functional and cosmetic outcomes.

The Procedure
Adult circumcision is performed as a day surgery procedure under general or regional anaesthesia. The foreskin is carefully marked to ensure appropriate skin removal and optimal cosmetic outcome. The foreskin is removed using surgical excision, and the skin edges are closed with dissolvable sutures. The procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes. A dressing is applied which can be removed after 24-48 hours.
Who Is a Candidate?
Circumcision is recommended for men with phimosis (inability to retract foreskin), recurrent balanitis or balanoposthitis (foreskin infections), paraphimosis (foreskin trapped behind the glans), lichen sclerosus affecting the foreskin, or other medical conditions of the foreskin. Some men also choose circumcision for personal, cultural, or religious reasons. Dr Dias will discuss your specific situation and expectations during consultation.
Recovery
Most men take 1-2 weeks off work, particularly if their job involves physical activity. Swelling and bruising are normal and peak at 2-3 days before gradually improving. Keep the wound clean and dry for the first few days. Avoid sexual activity for 4-6 weeks to allow complete healing. Dissolvable sutures fall out on their own over 2-3 weeks. Final cosmetic appearance is achieved at 6-8 weeks.
Risks & Considerations
Circumcision is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced surgeon. Potential complications include bleeding or haematoma (uncommon), wound infection (rare), altered penile sensation (usually temporary), cosmetic dissatisfaction (rare with experienced surgeon), meatal stenosis (narrowing of urethral opening, rare), and need for revision surgery (<1%). Dr Dias will discuss your individual risk factors during consultation.
