The Procedure
The UroLift procedure is performed as an outpatient under local or light sedation. A small delivery device is inserted through the urethra to access the enlarged prostate. Under direct visualisation, small permanent implants are placed to lift and hold the obstructing prostate lobes apart, like opening curtains, creating an open channel for urine to flow. The number of implants used depends on the size and shape of your prostate, typically 4-6. The procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
Who Is a Candidate?
UroLift is suitable for men with moderate BPH symptoms caused by lateral lobe enlargement who wish to preserve sexual function. It works best for prostates between 30 and 80 grams without a significantly enlarged middle lobe. UroLift is particularly attractive for men who prioritise preservation of ejaculatory function, want to avoid long-term medication, or prefer the least invasive option with fastest recovery. Dr Dias will assess your prostate anatomy via cystoscopy or imaging to determine if UroLift is appropriate for your situation.
Recovery
Most patients do not require a catheter after UroLift and can go home the same day. Symptom improvement is often noticed within the first 2 weeks. Some temporary side effects are common initially, including mild discomfort, blood in urine, and increased frequency—these typically resolve within 2-4 weeks. Most men can return to normal activities within a few days. Sexual function, including ejaculation, is typically preserved.
Risks & Considerations
UroLift has an excellent safety profile with low rates of complications. The most common side effects are temporary and include painful urination, blood in urine, pelvic pain, and urgency. These typically resolve within 2-4 weeks. There is no risk of new-onset erectile dysfunction or ejaculatory dysfunction. Some patients may require additional treatment in the future if symptoms recur or were not adequately addressed. The procedure is not suitable for all prostate anatomies, particularly those with large middle lobes.
